Groundhog Day originated in Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries. It comes from ancient European weather lore and the medieval Catholic holiday of Candlemas.
On the film set for the 1993 classic, “Groundhog Day”, Bill Murray was bitten by the rodent twice, needing 2 anti-rabies shots.
The original script had the lead character be more philosophical, which wouldn’t have suited Murrays character. Re-writes were heavily needed.
The total amount of time relived in the film is somewhere between 10 to 30 years, just to get that perfect day and moment of clarity and love.
